When I was in high school, I had these long bi-weekly English class assignments our ironic teacher called Journals. They were more like formal essays that delved into the specifics of metonomy, simile and slant rhyme, etc. Anyway, we all procrastinated online of course, chatting away on AIM. And then, after midnight, I’d be furiously typing away in my room trying to get it all done. I used to put on this Delilah to keep me company. And as I’ve recently started to write more at night, I’m coming back to it.
I didn’t expect to because it’s oh um um not my style. It’s cheese-stastic. But, I love it!
Basically it’s a call-in format that just breathes 90s flair, playing the lightest, mushiest soft-rock recorded between from the 1960s onward. I love her show because it’s like having company in the room who, from time to time, say something interesting, that breaks the monotony of typing, cleaning or whatever.
People routinely call in and tell the most profound, what I would think of as embarrassing details about their lives. At first I felt it was way too kitsch but still their candor intrigued me. And then they won me over. Some people cry on air.
I am still surprised by the number of men who first of all listen to this show and then call in! Maybe because we are taught in popular culture that the phallus-endowed ones are unsentimental. It’s a kind of a cool way to get to know people, even if I never meet them. I love the stories.
This kind of radio program is the original blog platform — where people came together to share something about themselves in a semi-public way, that somewhat marries intimacy and the public domain.
Anyway, if you happen to be working late at night it’s a great show. She often talks about the hijinks her kids get up to. She has a million (exaggeration obvious) adopted children and gives very real “tough love” (emphasis on the love) advice to people who call in.
Remember Dr. Marcia from Sleepless in Seattle? Like that. Her name is Delilah and her slogan is “Love Someone Tonight” :)
Ay, cynism is dead. Love Someone Tonight!

I love you tonight and always. I never that you procrastinated on getting your homework done in high school; I just thought you were the most “Gicky” kid in town. Anyway, I am very proud of you anf of what you have made of yourself. Please send me on of the black and white picture with the sheet wrapping around your head.
Keep up with the good spirit,
Marie
