The scene: A park in Washington DC. The little park mews away from the noise of Connecticut Avenue and it’s lovely there except for the crazy squirrels, which may or may not have rabies. This is my opinion or paranoia. But I’ll say they are rather aggressive. We had to move our Fourth of July lunch to the other side of the park because one of them kept lunging at us, despite hysterical shrieks…from me. I am not scared of many things but I have a very strange phobia of rabies. It may have something to do with that book, Of Love and Other Demons, where a young girl gets bitten by a dog, which dies, and then the girl begins to manifest such madness that people don’t even bother with rabies. They think nothing short of devilish possession could pervert her so. The girl, named Sierva Maria – what a name! Sierva meaning slave girl and this being set in colonial times in Latin America – eventually gets exorcized, dies, and years later her tomb is excavated in circumstances unimportant to us right now. The important thing is that rabies is incurable. So any animal even remotely agitated freaks me out! It’s really funny and people laugh at me because it’s just a weird paranoid thing. Most pets are vaccinated and have grown up in domesticated settings, etc. yet there was I was standing on the table. The mind is a mysterious thing.
The Action: After the squirrel attack, Onewayoranother and I moved on with the Fourth of July lunch. Look at this respectable Spanish lady having white sangria in a public park. This, in Spain is called, botellón. I feel like it was a low dose of alcohol to be had in a public park and it’s July 4th so let the celebrations rise!
The Costumes: onewayornaother in pixie flower tank, me in US colonial inspired jacket and red dress.
The Feast: sausages on ciabatta, corn on the cob, cake, white wine sangria (fruits are strawberries and kiwi).
It was so hot that it became more comfortable to stand. We were sweating everywhere!! So the sangria came in handy :)

And that’s how us city girls do Independence Day. Happy 4th!!
