Things I love right now:

The taste of summer. Morning running over the bridge. Working; I’m seriously just happy to be kicking it down at the office and then wrap up and go be creative at home; attitude is everything. The color blue. Walking barefoot (too hot for socks!). Reading. Reading. Editing pictures from my travels; grateful. Lunching in the park.White wine sangria. Brightly painted toenails. Meeting new people. My parents “I’m just checking up on you” calls.

- A Twitter-like web for your online shopping? Follow designers and friends to see the latest sales and promotions and keep track of your own shopping wish list in the same place. Follow my lyst, if you please. Most of my items are under 100 dollars because I like it to keep it frugal.

- Thinking about updating your style? I was having a new friend who adoooores shopping. She’s an intelligent woman and a journalist as well. She has a great eye for style and a great love of comfort. Not in a superficial way but in a way that says “I value myself, I take care of myself.” She also led a difficult life when she was young and I think it has made her tremendously appreciate of what she’s got now. But all of a sudden she turned to me and said “You look boring today.” And our other friend, a Swedish diplomatic kind, says “no, I love your jacket.” But M. continues. “No, it doesn’t match your energy, etc.” Then she gives me a spiel on how style and colors should match my energy. Style and color are like register and tone. Register and tone should match you say when you’re telling a story so people get your point right, or the punchline hard, if it’s a joke. So, I asked myself “What am I trying to say?”
Bam!

- Mr. Alaia speaks to my heart. Inspires. Best bit:

How many hours a day do you work?
I begin at 9 am and I go to bed around 2am, sometimes around 3am. I sleep little. If I’m not working or entertaining, I love to watch the National Geographic channel. It takes my mind off business. I don’t take things too seriously, though — in this system, you are closed in. You will wake up one day and you will think, “Shit, what have I done?” You have to take things with a lot of laughter. I laugh with everyone, this way I will be able to die happy. And I put myself on the same level as everyone else around me – from the directrice to the workman, everyone. Except my pets — they are the Kings; you must treat them like royalty.
Four or five hours of sleep — is that enough time to develop a dream?
I don’t waste time when I sleep.
How would you describe the man I am facing right now?
I don’t try to understand myself. I live more like this: every morning when I wake up, I ask myself, “What will I learn today?” Really, it’s true. When I wake up I am happy to open my eyes, happy to be alive, to feel good, to have no diseases. And then I ask myself, what will I learn today? Who will I get to know today?

- London has great bookstores. I picked up the Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing for something like 2 pounds. It is an interesting book because it’s gives such depth inside each character, who happen to be intelligent women, engaged with world. It has grand themes like social justice as well as personal themes like how to build a life worth getting up for in the morning. I think The Golden Book meant a lot to Feminist generations past. In fact, as I was returning to Washington, I sat next to an Israeli woman. Late forties, university professor from Tel Aviv. She just loved Doris Lessing and we started talking about that and ended up in a candid discussion about Netanyahu and women serving in the military in Israel. If the last topic is of interest, see the film, Close to Home.

Everywhere, if you keep your mind open, you will find the turth in words not written down. So never let the printed page be your master. -  Doris Lessing

Art Inspiring Us

Beyoncé rocks my world, Year of 4 documentary. I hope you got a chance to see her inspiring interview on Piers Morgan, who by the way is a skillful interviewer. He’s obviously prepared (notecards!) but he makes the entire thing feel like a chat in his living room every time.

I embrace mistakes because you learn from them. I’ve never been afraid to fall. – Beyoncé
