Another beautiful rainy day. The shimmering light that bounces off the puddles, the sparkling pavement and cobblestone sidewalks. And, umbrellas. Beautiful Umbrellas. My very first umbrella was a large red tent I insisted on carrying myself even though it was taller than me. It was like a staff of power. I carried it like Christopher Columbus did that proverbial stake with which he claimed our island and everything that was good on it.
When it rains in Washington DC, I miss Florida because its weather gods are not trifling like our DC patrons. They are clear and direct. Either scorching sunlight or hard heavy rains. When it rains in the summer in Florida it pours thick grey sheets down and thunder strikes the fear of God into little children. Then the curtain lifts and behold a beautiful fragrant night. In DC the rain is a persistent limp spittle. A soft rain that can last for days…
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground.
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound,
And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,
Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire – Sara Teasdale
