If you are an art lover, you’ll enjoy finding El Greco paintings here as this was his hometown. The stained glass stained glass windows are fit for a Gothic cathedral but they actually belong to ornately designed train station. The architecture also han an Arabesque look to it with its arched passeways and towers that seem like minarets.

The first picture in this post is called We’ve Been Here Before. We are seeing a memory within a memory, the bridge reflected in the water below and in the shadow from the last time these two figures met on this same bridge…

Toledo.

Last December I took a one-day trip to Toledo while I was visiting friends in Madrid for Christmas. This little town on the Tajo River is one of my favorite places in the world. I love the quality of the light, which is that way all throughout the region {Castilla La Mancha}. The light makes the old brick bridges and homes look like baked goods and even when it is cold the cobblestone invites you to walk. Its quaint street lamps recall a time when efficiency walked hand in hand with beauty. Its avenues are so narrow sometimes two people cannot past abreast.

It’s a tantalizing city with great vines – some of the best white wines – and shy corners for canoodling, places so old and rich with memory and yet so intimate that you feel as though they are just your own little secret. If you haven’t been, I hope you get to visit one day. Absolute gem of the earth.
